Microsoft has released a major update to its Windows 8 software, called Windows 8.1. It offers a number of major enhancements, including broadband tethering and improved malware resistance, as well as several user interface changes. Now that it's out, you may be wondering how you can get it onto your customized laptop.
The good news is that this is a relatively easy process. The first step is to backup everything on your computer. When updating an operating system, the computer is in a somewhat vulnerable position - if it is accidentally shut down or has a software glitch, it could render your hard drive inaccessible. Backing up ensures that if this happens, you won't lose any of your valuable data.
You should also make sure that your laptop is plugged in. The installation process is power intensive and if you run out of battery, you risk losing data.
To download the update, go to the Start screen and click on the Windows Store icon. You should see a button on the first page of the Store that lets you proceed with downloading Windows 8.1. Tap that button. The update will begin downloading and will check to make sure that your existing apps will work with 8.1. Something to keep in mind is that any apps you downloaded from the Windows Store will need to be re-downloaded, but the update should automatically take care of this once it is installed.
After your laptop computer installs Windows 8.1, it'll ask to restart the machine. You'll be prompted to agree to Microsoft's new licensing agreement and you'll come to a screen where you can either go with automatic settings or create a more customized experience.
