Microsoft Windows 8.1 is here, and it has so many new features that you've probably not noticed every single one. Particularly because it's so different from past versions of Windows, many users with laptop computers may not have fully explored the various customization options that make Windows 8.1 a more personalized experience.
Business Insider has listed some of the more notable hidden features of the operating system that can help you get the most out of this update. Here are some of their key points:
- Boot To Desktop: The release of Windows 8.1 coincides with the reintroduction of the famous "Start" button, which had been at the center of previous versions going back to Windows 95. However, other than adding a new way to access apps, the Start button doesn't really give users any more control over their device than they already had with the Metro interface. So, if you want to disable it, you can right-click the taskbar and select "Properties," then click on the "Navigation" tab. You should see a box that states "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start." Check that box and you'll be able to skip the start screen.
- Quiet Hours: Because Windows 8.1 is meant to be a mobile and desktop hybrid operating system, it tends to make a lot of reminder noises as a tablet or smartphone would. To shut these off at night so your sleep is interrupted, go to the "Settings" charm, find the "Change PC settings" and then "Search and Apps". Under this option you should be able to set "quiet hours," during which time the device won't make any noise.
