Internet search and technology giant Google announced this week that it will continue its quest to get everyone online. The tech leader teamed up with Boingo, a public Wi-Fi provider, to sponsor ad-supported free wireless internet in many parts of New York City earlier this year. When the initiative was met with success, the companies decided to take their experiment on the road, bringing Wi-Fi to shopping malls. Earlier this week, Google announced that it will sponsor another 4,000 Boingo hotspots across the United States.
This will add free internet access to thousands of American locations that are not currently online. The internet will become available at 15 major airports including Chicago O'Hare, as well as restaurants, shopping malls and hotels from shore to shore.
Boingo previously focused on providing its internet access on a subscription basis, and despite having 94 million subscribers around the world, most of its revenue came from telecommunications providers. The company is now looking to grow its advertising revenue, and Elise Ackerman, a contributor to Forbes, says the high-profile ad buy from Google should contribute to the efforts.
From a business standpoint, Ackerman says that sponsored Wi-Fi seems like a win-win. So far, many consumers are very willing to watch an advertisement in exchange for free internet access, which makes it a good value ad buy for companies.
The expanded wireless coverage means that there is access for the general public. If you are interested in getting a more portable laptop or tablet, talk to the experts from PortableOne.
