There's no doubt that high-quality tablets like the iPad and iPad mini are becoming both more useful and ubiquitous every day. Students bring them along to class, while commuters rely on them to catch up on reading on their way to work. It might seem that there's simply no end to what these incredible instruments can do.
But there are some things that people still need laptops for. Joel Santo Domingo wrote about it recently for PC Mag late last week. Here are three reasons not to give up that customized laptop just yet:
1. Keyboards are still best for typing - If you need to write anything longer than an email, an actual keyboard is preferable to the on-screen version on an iPad. While this system and the iOS word-predictor are perfect for search and other functions, these features can be a little clunky when it comes to really sitting down to write.
2. Running major software - Whether it's a huge spreadsheet or photo editing software, the author notes that it's much easier to do with a larger screen and dedicated keyboard and track pad, not to mention the fact that a lot of these heavy duty programs simply can't run on a tablet. If you're an engineer, film editor or work with any other kind of specialized software, your job will require the use of a laptop or PC.
3. Gaming - For most hardcore gamers, stock laptops simply just don't cut it, since they'll need to customize them with the right accessories to play these intensive programs. A tablet doesn't have the power, screen size or setup that's required for playing your favorite game. So while these devices are simply fantastic for some things, Joel Santo Domingo doesn't think laptops are going anywhere any time soon.
