Rumors have been swirling for months about Apple's next generation of iPhone and what it will look like and be made out of. The iPhone 6 is expected to be released sometime later this year, though the company has remained typically quiet while industry insiders and experts have been speculating about the latest device. Reports surfaced earlier this year that the screens for the iPhone 6 would be made out of sapphire - speculation fueled by Apple's plans to create a sapphire plant in Arizona. This week, the company providing the sapphire to Apple confirmed these reports.
Apple's sapphire supplier, GT Advance Technologies, Inc. released its fourth-quarter fiscal results on Monday, February 24, which included a projection of how the company would be doing for profitability in 2014. The results that were released in the report show a significant rise in the company's earnings during the second half of the year, a time that coincides perfectly with the expected release of the iPhone 6.
"Our results for the December quarter were in line with our guidance, and the anticipated growth trajectory of our business remains unchanged," said Tom Gutierrez, president and CEO at GT Advance Technologies. "We expect to return to profitability during the second half of 2014."
Gutierrez went on to talk about how happy GT is to have Apple as a sapphire customer, and to be able to use their considerable expertise to supply the versatile and durable material to the smartphone company. GT recently put a pause on the sale of its sapphire furnaces to focus on building Apple's plant in Arizona.
