After 14 months officially at the helm of the world's most valuable company, Apple CEO Tim Cook decided it was time to make some changes. Earlier this week it was announced that two prominent Apple executives would be leaving the company, and though it was not explicitly stated, it's assumed by the public that they were asked to do so.
One of the more notable departures is that of Scott Forstall, a devout follower of the late CEO and industry guru Steve Jobs. Forstall was with the company starting in 1997, and stayed loyal during its meteoric rise. Many industry insiders had him placed on their short lists for possible next CEO.
Writers at The New York Times and GigaOm are now saying that visual manager Jonny Ive will have full control over the look and feel of Apple products without the opposition that Forstall was known to provide. This could have widespread effects, since much of the tech industry looks to Apple as a source of design innovations.
Many analysts are saying that this move serves to solidify Cook not just as a caretaker of the brand following the death of Steve Jobs, but rather that he plans to take the company in his own direction.
We will only have to see what other changes Cook makes, but if he continues to oversee the development and launch of innovative products like the iPad mini, it's likely that the public will continue to support Apple the way it currently does.
