Earlier this week, Apple was given a patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for creating a new kind of flexible screen for smartphones, tablets and laptops, which would ultimately lead to devices that no longer require any physical buttons.
The patent describes in detail how this process would work. In the beginning, consumers could put on a flexible layer of material over the screen of their device, which would allow them to create and use new buttons on demand. It could even be placed over existing buttons - such as the home button on the iPhone - which would offer a layer of protection from damage while creating a continuous interface for the user.
These flexible materials would eventually benefit Apple - and customers - in a major way. If this process proves successful, it would eventually encourage the tech giant to create devices that are entirely display screen, without the need for any buttons. They would be able to "grow" or create buttons when they are needed by the user. This would be great for those customers who might have vision problems and struggle to use the keys on the physical keyboard.
The new technology is just in the planning stages, and there have been no major announcements as to if or when it will be incorporated into future lines of the iPhone, iPad mini or Macbook Pro. But it is believed it will be used down the road as it would be a major step toward saving space on these devices.
