Last week, Apple put months of rumor and speculation to rest when it officially announced that it would be acquiring Beats for just over $3 billion. With this acquisition complete, Apple is now turning its sights on changing another part of its business - the iPhone. It was reported on June 5 that Apple filed a patent for a version of its signature smartphone that would see it get rid of the traditional headphone jack, effectively changing how people can listen to music.
Instead of users being able to connect their headphones to their smartphones in order to listen to music or other audio files, customers will now be able to route the sound through a new lightning charging port, connecting the phone to headphones wirelessly. The headphones will come equipped with their own power supply, as well as having the ability to control apps and features on the iPhone itself. Many see this as Apple's way of connecting its plans for streaming music with its purchase of Beats.
Although the patents have been filed, Apple has not discussed when these plans will be integrated into their line of iPhones.
In addition to getting rid of the need for wires, the new headphones will also be more advanced than what is currently on the market, with features such as high-definition sound and more powerful speakers. Space will also be saved on the physical iPhone itself by not having to include the headphone jack, which could become a unique selling point in the increasingly crowded smartphone market.
