When it comes to Apple's line of products, one of the most consistent points of criticism is how vulnerable the screens are to damage. If they are lacking in a protective case and dropped from even a minimal height, the screen can shatter and become almost useless. The tech giant has taken those criticisms to heart with the iPhone 6, which will reportedly come with a far more durable screen than past models.
The iPhone 6 is currently slated to be released sometime this fall. While most of the details are currently under wraps - Apple doesn't discuss their technology before official announcements are made to the general public- more and more information about the new smartphone has been leaking out over the past few months. Most reports now indicate that the iPhone 6 will come built with sapphire screens, making them more resistant to scratches and cracks.
What first fueled these rumors was Apple's partnership with New Hampshire-based technology materials manufacturer GT Advanced. Now, according to a new report, GT Advanced has installed nearly 3,000 sapphire furnaces in Apple's Arizona plant for the company's exclusive use. The facility is projected to be able to produce as many as 200 million sapphire panels annually, which is around 50 million more than the total number of iPhones sold in 2013.
