While maintaining a safe and secure computer entails protect it from malware, viruses and other software threats, it's just as important to safeguard the hardware of the machine too.
Here are a few ways you can improve the physical security on your Macbook Pro:
- Don't leave the Macbook unattended: While this might seem like a fairly obvious point, many of us are guilty of leaving a computer unprotected on our desks while running to grab lunch or a cup of coffee. If you are using your laptop in a public space - even if it is in your office - be sure to always leave the device locked away in a desk drawer or take it with you. Even if you are only gone for a few moments, that is more than enough time for it to be stolen.
- Lock your screen: Set up your computer so that it locks each time it is closed. This means that whenever you step away from your computer and shut it, nobody will be able to open it back up and get into your stuff. After opening up System Preferences and clicking on Users & Groups, be sure to select Login Options, where you will be able to enable the lock screen.
- Set up an account password: If you are faced with the situation where your laptop is taken, don't make it easy for the thief to access any of your personal information. By having your account protected by a password that only you know, it will be that much more difficult for an unwanted person to make their way into your files. Simply open the System Preferences, click Users & Groups, select your account from the list on the screen and create the password.
