It's April Fool's Day, and despite the fact that this practical joking holiday comes around once a year, it seems that some people forget to approach everything they hear and read with a healthy amount of skepticism. The folks at notoriously creative search engine giant Google got really into the idea of such pranks today, treating their loyal followers to numerous false pieces of news.
The developers at Google must have been hard at work for months creating all of these practical jokes, which ranged from everything from an announcement of the closing of YouTube to Google Blue - which is just like Google, but blue.
The company was at the center of more than a dozen April Fools Day tricks, many of which were shared virally by friends on social media who were either fooled by the antics or in on the joke. Google Nose - the "new" feature that allows you to find out what the things you search for smell like - was particularly popular. According to the company, "Street Sense" vehicles had indexed millions of atmospheric miles for the way they smelled in order to collect the data. The website encouraged users to smell such items as "wet dog" and "used napkin."
But that's not all the company had to joke about. Can you imagine getting out your customized laptop or iPad and opening Google Maps to find your way to a stash of buried treasure? That's what the proposed Google Maps Treasure Mode would do. The special map contains encrypted symbols that treasure hunters have to decipher, and takes on an antique look.
