A frustrating aspect of flying is that users must shutdown their customized laptop while the plane is taxiing on the runway and taking off. Particularly if you're a businessperson flying to a conference and you need all the time you can get prepping on your computer, it can be a hassle to leave it in your bag, especially if the plane is delayed in leaving the airport. But the New York Times reports that one day soon you won't have to worry about these rules.
The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) is considering relaxing the rules that restrict the use of electronic devices while the plane is on the runway and below 10,000 feet. In the past, these regulations were put in place because the FAA was concerned about passenger safety and possible interference with cockpit instruments. However, there has been a growing movement within the airline community and the public calling into question the wisdom of such rules.
It's very difficult for flight attendants to ensure that no passengers are using their devices, and making them police the cabin when they have other responsibilities may be as safety hazard in of itself. There is also little evidence that smartphones, tablets or laptops actually interfere with the pilot's equipment and controls.
This is good news, as the advent of in-flight WiFi systems and content delivery have made carrying mobile devices almost a necessity when flying.
