This week, all eyes in the tech community are on the Mobile World Congress. The conference features numerous launches and events from high-profile brands and innovative start-ups, all vying for the attention of the public in this forum.
And, though the week-long conference just began, the first big announcement came from General Motors (GM). The car company announced today that it will be adding super fast 4G LTE to its 2015 fleet, meaning that millions of cars will soon be able to do a slew of new things.
GM has been on the forefront of incorporating technology, both for safety and convenience, into its cars. The OnStar brand is managed by the company, and during the launch, executives touted the fact that this will help to make features like that even more all-encompassing.
The LTE will be provided by cellular company AT&T, and it has not been announced yet exactly what the scale of the undertaking will be. But, it's easy to imagine that this might be the first step in a future when your car can be a hotspot for customized laptops, making car-pooled business commutes and long trips much more productive.
Though Glenn Lurie, who spoke for GM, said that the first and foremost focus of the new technology will be safety, since the last thing they would want to do is come up with a new way in which drivers can be distracted.
It's easy to see how something like this would recruit a good deal of customers for GM. And, if your car is a hot-spot, you might find that you need a customized iPad mini or other device specifically for the space. That's where we come in.
