Earlier this year, Apple announced the creation and development of CarPlay, a new system that would allow users to control the functions of their cars with their iPhones. Audi became one of the first major car manufacturers to announce a timeline for when CarPlay would be integrated into its new models, though customers are in for a bit of a wait before it becomes standard.
According to a new report from Apple insider website 9to5Mac, Audi told reporters that CarPlay will be supported in its new cars beginning in 2015, but specifically for those models that are available in Europe. For American customers, the wait will be a bit longer, as CarPlay will not be included in North American vehicles until sometime in 2016. The German automaker is working closely with Apple during this process.
With CarPlay, users will be able to make phone calls, play music, display maps and receive voicemails and text messages through either voice commands or using the car's touchpad. The purpose of this system is to create a feeling of luxury, while also giving drivers less reasons to be distracted on the road. The ease of the commands will allow users to drive and use their phones seamlessly.
Honda, Volvo, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz are among the other car manufacturers that will have CarPlay included in their new models sometime within the next year. BMW, Ford and Toyota have not made any announcements detailing specific plans of a rollout, though it is expected that they will also be including the Apple smart car system in the near future.
