Apple has been granted a new patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that will revolutionize its existing smartphone navigation system. The patent was given to the tech company on Tuesday, April 14, and it describes a new way that individuals can use their phones to pinpoint their exact locations while they are indoors.
The new navigation system that Apple wants to create will combine GPS, WiFi access points and onboard location databases. By factoring in these different components into what the patent has dubbed "presence areas," a mobile device will be able to pinpoint its exact location on a map with relative precision.
Though the system is currently being developed for Apple's line of iPhones, it could eventually be expanded to devices that do not have a built-in GPS. The phone would be able to determine its area by using the location information of devices that are connected to the same WiFi network.
Apple could incorporate this new system into its later versions of the iPhone as a way to expand its existing map application. Industry insiders believe this new advanced GPS system would be a cheap and easy way for the company to provide indoor maps to its customers, as well as a way for businesses to hyper-locally promote themselves to nearby customers.
This potential system is still in its planning stages, with Apple remaining typically silent on these new reports.
