It's safe to say that most people would not have heard of Cupertino?, California, were it not for the presence of Apple's headquarters, which have been located there for many years. So it's not altogether surprising that the company recently received approval from the Cupertino city council to proceed with the construction of an enormous, new campus that resembles a spaceship.
Apple's new building will be a circular, 2.8 million square foot building surrounded by trees and forests on 176 acres of land. At four stories, the structure will serve as home base for 14,000 Apple employees, according to video game news site GameSpot.com. The exterior is covered almost entirely by curved glass, and many areas that are currently concrete will be converted to lush landscapes full of trees and plant life.
The new campus will include underground parking, a fitness center and a reworking of existing roadways to better accommodate traffic. The company hopes to increase public transit ridership as well as employee use of Apple's shuttle system. The tech giant hopes to begin clearing the land of existing structures later this year, and the whole project is expected to be complete by 2016.
It's important for innovative companies like Apple to provide state-of-the-art facilities to their employees, as this helps attract the top engineering talent, allowing them to continue producing the world's best customized laptops and mobile computing solutions.
