When it comes to technology, it is commonly believed that thinner is always better. The more compact and lighter a device is, the easier it can be to use on the move. While Apple has been revolutionary in their thin electronics - with products such as the Macbook Air - the company has their sights set on reducing the size of another key piece of the iPhone and iPad: The camera.
Earlier this week, Apple filed a new patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that describes a way for the company to reduce the size of the camera that comes built into its smartphones and tablets. The piece that would be altered in new generations is the camera autofocus module, which would be replaced with the use of a micro-electro-mechanical system.
The smaller piece that would be used for new versions of the iPhone and iPad would greatly improve the current camera used, both in terms of its size and power efficiency. The current way that the iPhone camera uses autofocus and its lens is slow and consumes much of the smartphone's battery life, an impact that would be reduced with the new technology Apple wants to introduce.
While Apple has remained customarily quiet about this new patent, industry insiders believe that this new technology could be a great upgrade for the company's existing smartphone and tablet cameras. It is currently unknown whether the new version of the camera will be included with the iPhone 6 when the phone is introduced to the general public this fall.
