Following days of speculation fueled by a report from Apple insider website 9to5Mac, the tech company rolled out a new version of the Macbook Air on Tuesday, April 29. While the latest edition has many tweaks made from the existing models, a more radical overhaul of the device is still expected to come sometime this fall.
While insiders were confident that an updated Macbook Air would be released by Apple this week, the company remained typically tight-lipped about its actions. According to sources, Apple began shipping out these new laptops to stores across the country as early as last weekend.
The newest version of the Macbook Air comes with a more powerful central processor and storage capability. The new model is available in two sizes: one with an 11-inch screen and another with a 13-inch screen. The smaller laptop comes with 128GB of storage, while the slightly larger one comes with 256GB.
What customers will notice right away is the drop in price. The new Macbook Air is selling for $900, a full $100 off of what the computer was selling for previously. Apple says that the decreased cost is a company wide effort to make its electronic products more affordable for the general population.
Apple is still expected to release a new generation Macbook Air at some point later in the year. According to 9to5Mac, this version will be 12-inches, acting as a kind of hybrid of the ones that are currently available on the market. It would be just as powerful as the larger model, while having the portability of the existing smaller Macbook Air.
