Last Sunday, filmmaker Spike Jonze won an Academy Award for his critically acclaimed movie "Her," the story of a man who falls for his smartphone's personal assistant. Though most acknowledge that the kind of interface between person and technology as depicted in the movie is something for the distant future, Apple is making strides to improve it's own computerized helper - Siri - by making it more adaptable to third-party apps and features.
As it currently is, Siri is only able to do very limited tasks - recognize voice commands, look things up on the internet and respond to text messages through Apple's iMessage system. But Apple is looking for ways to expand Siri's scope. For Siri to recognize an app, for example, Apple must have a one-on-one business arrangement with that program's provider. An improved Siri would be able to run apps regardless of the company's dealings with Apple.
Apple is also looking to make Siri able to book hotel or restaurant reservations, make a car rental and send texts on systems other than iMessage. There is a clamoring from Apple customers to make Siri more adaptable to other third-party programs - such as Instagram or Spotify - to make using these platforms even easier. The demands for a more useful and wide-ranging Siri come at a time when Google is getting ready to debut their own version of Siri to the general public, increasing the pressure on Apple.
