While Apple's acquisition of Beats Electronics earlier this week has been generating a lot of headlines, the company is making significant moves in another area of their headphones business. A new report has surfaced that Apple recently filed two new patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that would alter how consumers use and interact with their iPhone earpods.
The two new patent applications cover separate areas of the earpod, but they would ultimately come together to make a better product. In one new design, the headphones would be able to detect the presence of the listener through sensors that would determine whether or not it is in a person's ear. When the headphones are taken out the music or other audio that was playing would automatically come to a stop without the person having to pause it themselves.
The other patent filed by Apple this week would change how the devices are actually built. The new generation of earpods would come with a noise cancelling microphone built directly inside, so users would be able to drown out any surrounding sounds while listening to their music. This would be a major step in the right direction for Apple's headphones, functioning in the same way as larger headphones on the market that can cancel out sound while still maintaining their signature sleek and minimalist design.
