Everybody is guilty of doing this at some point: You're walking down the sidewalk when your phone buzzes with a new text message, so you take it out and begin to respond. With your phone taking up all of your attention you momentarily lose track of your surroundings, so you end up walking into an object such as a trash can or even another person. Apple is working on technology that would solve this problem, to spare you the embarrassment of being a lousy walker and texter.
According to a new report, Apple has filed a new application for a "transparent texting" system with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week. It would work by the iPhone's rear-facing camera continuously displaying images it captures. The background of the phone would into a view of where the phone is facing, instead of the typical phone background. This would allow users to be able to text while still being able to see what is around them, to avoid any potential personal injury.
This new system would give the phone the illusion of transparency, making it safe to use the phone while moving. The text screen itself would also be transparent, with just the words appearing on the screen instead of the typical word bubbles that iPhone users are so familiar with. It is currently unknown when Apple will make this feature available to the general public.
