Although texting while driving is incredibly dangerous, it is something that most drivers are guilty of doing from time to time. While making a normal phone call is one of the more reckless things a person can do while on the road, texting is a whole different animal. Not only does it take your mental focus away from driving, it physically consumes your attention, as your eyes will be on your phone and not the road. According to a new report, Apple might have come up with a solution to this issue.

This week, Apple was given a patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office that could cut down on the amount of accidents that are caused by texting while behind the wheel. According to the patent, the new technology would use a smartphone's on-board sensors or a direct connection to the car to determine whether or not a person is driving. The device's functionality would then be severely limited for the duration of the ride, not allowing an individual to access distractions like text messages or emails.

The feature would be able to determine whether the car is actually in motion or resting through the accelerator and other sensors to either lock or unlock these features appropriately. The tech company is also working on a way to add a feature to this system that would allow the phone to be used by somebody in the car who is not the driver. Whether or not this software feature is developed for future Apple electronic devices is something that will be seen in the future.
