Apple held an event in San Francisco today, where it unveiled several new products while also releasing a few that had been in the pipeline for some time. The event was just in time for the holiday season, so it seems that the new iPad and the other items Apple introduced today will be hot commodities this Christmas.
Here are some of the biggest announcements that the company made:
- MacBook Pro Update: The MacBook Pro received an update, incorporating Intel Haswell processors, which provide a boost in speed and processing power while helping to preserve battery life.
- New iPad Air: Apple unveiled the fifth generation of the iPad tablet, called the iPad Air. Featuring an A7 processor, 9.7 inch screen and a slimmer, lower profile design, the iPad Air is 8 times faster the first generation tablet, and boasts improved graphics processing speeds.
- Release of Mac OS X Mavericks: The newest edition of Mac OS X, nicknamed "Mavericks," was released today and, most importantly, it is available for free. This is a major departure from the typical operating system rollout, which usually requires users to pay for an upgrade. Over the years, Apple has been charging less and less for upgrading Mac OS X, and with Mavericks it appears to have decided to adopt the business model it practices with iOS: Namely, to release the operating system for free as a way to encourage users to stay with Apple devices and decrease fragmentation.
