The Pew Research Center, a consumer data and political polling research organization, released a study on June 10 that showed one in three Americans owns a tablet computer such as an Apple iPad 4 or iPad mini. This number is almost double what it was just one year ago, when 18 percent of Americans possessed a tablet. The results point to what many in the technology industry are saying, which is that many users are migrating away from desktop computers to mobile devices.
Something that may surprise people about the Pew study is the demographic data. They report that almost half of tablet users are between ages 35-44 (49 percent), which is significantly more than any other age group. This is especially surprising considering that smartphone ownership tends to skew towards younger consumers (81 percent of users aged 18-25 own a smartphone).
The report states that tablet consumers tend to be wealthier. For respondents with incomes over $75,000, tablet ownership was at 56 percent.
Parents are more likely to own one of these devices than those consumers without children. Fifty percent of respondents with minor children living at home own a tablet compared while 27 percent of those polled who did not have children.
The acceleration in growth of this industry is further proof that these devices are becoming both more powerful, useful and accessible to a larger proportion of computer users. The intuitive, dynamic interface of Apple's iOS devices makes it easy for individuals to perform personal and business tasks while making even the most mundane activities fun and interesting.
