The tech community is gearing up for one of the biggest weeks of the quarter next week, with the impending launch of Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system, and the tablet that goes with it, the Microsoft Surface.
But tech giant Apple isn't used to having any other company commanding the spotlight, and it doesn't plan to let that happen this week either. Industry analysts predict that this was one of the company's reasons for scheduling a keynote press event on October 23.
It's presumed that Apple will announce its new iPad Mini, a device that has been rumored for some time now, along with a few other products at next week's event. However, the notoriously secretive company has not indicated whether this is true.
The date of the event wasn't even confirmed until yesterday, when the company sent out invitations asking the press to attend. The invitations were fun and colorful, featuring only the top of an Apple logo on a rainbow background. They had just one line of text.
"We've got a little more to show you," it read.
Industry analysts predict that the iPad Mini will be a big seller, but they have also been careful to warn the public not to discount Microsoft's efforts. That company's intriguing tablet has sold well in pre-orders, and those who put an order in now will have to wait three weeks for theirs.
