Just a few months after the launch of the iPad mini, it is clear that the tablet is extremely popular. Demand for this seven-inch wonder is reportedly so great that Sharp, one of its screen manufacturers, has halted production for 9.7-inch full-sized iPad screens to focus on the mini for the time being.
However, Reuters reporters checked with a few of the other manufacturers that Apple works with for displays - including LG, their largest contractor - and found no evidence of major changes in their production lines. Overall, this suggests that the iPad mini, which was expected to be an enormous hit anyway, might be even bigger than the company was expecting. According to forecasters from international trade bank BNP Paribas, the iPad mini is supposed to account for 60 percent of total iPad sales for the January to March quarter.
The source credits this easy shift to CEO Tim Cook, who is often cited as the mastermind behind Apple's enormous supply chain. Through his skill in this area, the company has experienced few shortagesdespite amazingly popular products. Due toCook's expertise, Apple is also very good at limiting the amount of unsold stock that they end up with, thus being able to maximize their profits. All of this has factored into company stock becoming so valuable in recent years.
It will be interesting to see whether the iPad mini retains its current popularity, or if it levels out after a while and shares the spotlight more equally with the large-screen iPad.
