It's a technological he-said-she-said that industry experts are calling the patent trial of the century. The legal dispute between Apple and Samsung is now in its third week of trial, and the judge is once again asking the two companies to consider a settlement.
The world's most profitable company, Apple, is suing its rival Samsung for billions of dollars that it asserts it lost because the folks at Samsung violated several hundred patents when it allegedly tried to copy its devices. Samsung is counter-suing, alleging that Apple also infringed on a few patents of their own.
"I see risks for both sides," Judge Lucy Koh said during one of the recent days of trial.
Koh has reportedly asked the companies to talk things out, and is urging them to settle out of court.
With the jury headed to deliberation next week, the two tech giants don't have much time to settle the score. But with the verdict in the hands of 12 ordinary citizens from San Jose, it is likely that neither side may actually get what they want.
The lawyers from both sides have examined and cross-examined a veritable parade of expert witnesses. Members of the tech community have looked on gleefully as both companies were required to make public former corporate secrets, such as design prototypes for Apple's iPad. When the lawyers for Apple submitted a list of 25 more witnesses that they would like to have speak on their behalf, Judge Koh said that they "must be smoking crack," according to reports.
It only remains to be seen whether the Samsung Galaxy tablet, iPad or any of the other devices in question will be ripped off the market because of the verdict of the case. But whether you support Apple or Samsung in this exciting court battle, PortableOne has a great selection of tablets, ultrabooks and customized laptops, all at great prices.
