As one of the most popular smartphones on the market, it comes as no surprise that the iPhone generates quite a bit of revenue on Apple's famous App Store. But new data published by Forbes magazine suggests that the revenue the store generates through dedicated apps for the iPad and popular new iPad mini is catching up to what it gets from the smartphone more quickly than the folks at Apple expected it to.
According to Oliver Lo, who works for App Annie - an app ranking and analytics service - iPad app revenue is currently outpacing the iPhone by a significant amount. Lo attributes this growth to the fact that Apple has brought this magical tablet to a broader customer base, taking away the kind of cost-based barriers that might have prevented a number of individuals from making a purchase of this kind in the past.
"With the launch of the iPad mini and the new iPad with Retina display, Apple has placed two very different price points, screen qualities and form factors in the hands of consumers and has grown the total monetizable user base available to iPad app publishers," Lo told the source in an interview.
Since iPad apps have been made available to more and more people, they're becoming big business. The larger screen size and the fact that people tend to be on their iPhones for longer have also led to more detailed graphical apps becoming popular on the tablet.
