It might seem like a tired plot point from an episode of almost every TV series (Arrested Development, The Big Bang Theory), but a new accessory for the iPad can make your life more like a sitcom. Or at least the part of the sitcom where one of the characters tries to replace himself with a robot to avoid being somewhere in person.
It's called the Double, and it's controlled by your iPad. The Double, by manufacturer Double Robotics, looks like an iPad mounted on a Segway, but it's really an iPad mounted on a sophisticated robot that looks like a Segway. It works by connecting the iSight camera on the Double to one on an ordinary iPad, which the owner can control from anywhere using an app that comes with the hardware.
The creators of the Double hope that it can be used by tablet owners for everything from attending a meeting to touring an art gallery. According to Cult of Mac, this is the most affordable telepresence robot to hit the market yet, which could make the gadget attractive to many consumers.
This is one of thousands of extensions for the iPad, one of the factors that's been keeping Apple's tablet in first place in terms of market share for the past several years. Rival tech companies Google and Microsoft have both announced tablets that aim to earn a piece of the tablet market as well, and while these new tablets match the iPad in portability and functionality by bringing media in through cloud computing, neither of these tablets is a part of a robot. Not yet anyway.
Whether you're looking for a Double to attend your next boring meeting on your behalf, or you would rather have a tablet so that you can watch TV on the train, PortableOne can help you find what you need.
