There's a fairly good chance that the router for wireless networking in your house is made by either Linksys or Belkin. These two companies are among the most popular in Wi-Fi technology, an increasingly popular solution as wireless networking becomes standard in American homes, especially with portable devices such as the iPad and iPad mini. And, according to a press release from Belkin, issued last week, the two brands are merging.
“We're very excited about this announcement,” said Chet Pipkin, CEO of Belkin, in the press release. “Our two organizations share many core beliefs – we have similar beginnings and share a passion for meeting the real needs of our customers through the strengths of an entrepreneurial culture. Belkin's ultimate goal is to be the global leader in the connected home and wireless networking space and this acquisition is an important step to realizing that vision.”
Linksys is actually a subsidiary of Cisco, aimed at the home, rather than businesses. Now that they have merged, Belkin and Linksys will team up for marketing, distribution as well as creating new innovations in their product line. Overall, the companies hope that this will provide them with a much larger pool of resources to work with, enabling them to pass even more powerful devices on to their consumers.
Though the specific finances of this deal are undisclosed, analysts assume that it was a significant amount of money, since both brands are household names, especially as they have essentially become iPad accessories.
