The App Stores for Apple and Google mobile devices are typically divided into two sections: Free and paid. The free apps are usually supported by advertising that pops up while users are working with the software, while paid apps offer a more seamless experience free of these distractions. This may lead some to believe that apps with a price would be more popular than free programs, given that no one likes ads, but according to a new report by analytics firm Flurry, app development is trending toward free and away from software that has a cost attached to it.
The report stated that 90 percent of apps are currently offered for free, more than in prior years when roughly 80 to 85 percent could be downloaded without paying. The study found that users may not like ads, but they dislike paying for software even more.
Of the remaining ten percent of apps that cost money, 60 percent are available for only 99 cents.
Flurry believes that this is the result of consumer demand: users want their programs for free more than they want to avoid advertising, so software developers are making the available at no cost.
