It's no secret that Apple has a massive following of dedicated fans. The incredible design and of these products has attracted numerous individuals who like to get together and chat about everything Apple in online forums, at conventions and just about anywhere else. And they were treated to an interesting look at the inner workings of their favorite company at an University of Arizona Marketing event yesterday.
The event featured Ken Segall, a former advertising lead for Apple, who told the crowd about the process by which the team of experts within the company came up with the name iPhone.
According to the speaker, the group wanted the name to sound like that of other Apple products, but wasn't sure which direction to go in. Rather than taking the name iPhone, Segall says that the company almost named the device "Telepod."
Another popular potential name, playing off of iPod branding was "Tripod," apparently called this because it was three devices in one. But, in retrospect, now that iOS devices can preform so many specific functions, it's easy to see how this name could have held them back.
Segall even told the crowd that they toyed with the name iPad, later given to the incredibly successful tablet. The touch-screen capabilities and business savvy of the phone would have come into play for this one. 9to5Mac, which sent a reporter to the event, also noted that this potential name makes more sense when we remember that Apple was working on the iPad before the iphone, but ended up fast-tracking it's incredible smartphone instead.
It's always interesting to look at the roads not taken by this tech giant, since it is now so successful, having developed such groundbreaking devices as the iPad mini.
