Apple's iOS App Store made $10 billion in 2013, according to a new press release from the company. In addition, about $1 billion of that came in December alone, making it the single most successful month in the App Store's history. It appears that the introduction of iOS 7 and subsequent redesigns of many popular apps have spurred increased interest in the company's mobile marketplace, where iPad mini and Air users can download the hottest new software for their devices.
Apple also announced that its developers had now made $15 billion since the App Store began selling programs in 2008. This is important because one of the things that makes Apple's devices useful to customers is the availability of thousands of high quality applications. If developers make good money from app sales, they'll devote more time to improving their existing software and coming up with new apps.
"We'd like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store," Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said in a news release. "The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014."
The iOS App Store features over 900,000 apps, including 500,000 which are designed specifically for the iPad. These programs are one of the main reasons that these tablets have been so popular.
