It’s no secret that external GPUs are becoming the next big thing for Mac power users. Being able to plug a GTX 1080, or a Titan X in a Macbook, not only is a massive boost in graphic performance for gamers and creative professionals: it’s also incredibly cool.

Technology has progressed greatly in the past 25 years, and the general consensus is that three file formats to handle three different tasks are simply two formats too many.

Storage size limitations, albeit expanding exponentially, would be the right answer, especially in the case of laptops, and tablets that run the desktop version of Windows 10, but even if we are getting warm, the actual answer is a combination of two factors: size and speed.

Updating a Mac isn’t anymore fun than it is to update any other desktop or mobile operating system, especially when a significant system update can put a hold on productivity, for an extended period of time.
