iOS likely to get a multi-sized split screen
iOS developer Steven Troughton posted this tweet on Monday, upon discovering code with iOS 8 which allows side-by-side split-screen functionality. Apple went one step further beyond the traditional concept of split screen, and added room for three different sizes, 341pt, 512pt, and 682pt. Each size can be used to prioritize apps display, by allocating screen real estate accordingly.
Sources suggest that Apple might be working on an iPad-only split-screen mode. Microsoft Surface benefits from a similar functionality, though native in MS Windows 8.
The question is whether or not the concept of split screen functionality actually work on smaller touchscreens, even as big as the iPad. When considering an open platform like android, where split screen is still merely an easy slider, complex apps and window management on a tablet is a feature that quite literally splits audiences into those who welcome to functionality, and those who find it utterly annoying.
Having said that, Apple’s timing couldn’t be perfect, considering the multitude of technologies being developed, Apple’s former strategy of aggressively pursuing an idea before everyone else does has shifted into an attitude of caution, taking a step back, watching what the market is doing before introducing radical new features.
