Windows 10 is officially the most popular Windows operating system Worldwide
According to web tracking company StatCounter, and as reported on Twitter by Microsoft Edge developer David Storey, Windows 10 has gained the majority of users, by an ever so slight margin, over Windows 7.
Windows 7 has been undisputedly the most widely used Microsoft operating system in the US, closely followed by Windows 10, on desktop systems. As of May 29th 2016, Windows 10 has reached 28.82% global market share, with Windows 7 falling behind at 28.65%.
The statistics relate to web usage, which is a more meaningful indicator of Windows 10 presence, than the number of installs, which can fluctuate depending on users willingness to stick with Windows 10 rather than rolling back to previous versions of Windows.
From this standpoint, this is great news for Windows 10, as the company is looking forward to next year’s widespread shipment of Windows 10 desktop PCs, laptops, 2-in-1’s and other hybrid devices.
Windows 10’s continued adoption has made its presence known on popular platforms, including Steam, which has shown consistent dominance of Windows 10 gaming users.
As of July 29th, Microsoft will officially end the year-long grace period for users to upgrade for free to Windows 10 from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. After July 29th 2016, the regular cost of upgrading to Windows 10 will enter into effect at $119 for the Home edition, and $199 for Windows 10 Pro.
Both editions feature advanced encryption capabilities, Windows Hello secure login, and Cortana integration, as well as an array of other productivity features.
