This might just be the best retro case for your New Apple MacBook

While there is no shortage of rugged MacBook cases, the look/durability ratio is often a hard bargain that tends to lean too much in favor of one versus the other. Most MacBook cases built to protect a MacBook from a fall, must sacrifice looks for durability. If you are planning to take your MacBook in a construction zone, and don’t mind a rugged, industrial look, there are plenty of choices, but if the goal is to protect your Mac and have it look good in a conference room, the options available are rather scarce.

Walnut Creek-based Gumdrop chief Tim Hickman and his team, have recently created a new kickstarter campaign for what might just be able to solve the problem of bringing balance to the looks/durability ratio of rugged MacBook cases.

The DropTech MacBook case is currently being designed for a 13 inch MacBook Air, with plans for a 2017 13 inch MacBook Pro:

“...By supporting our Kickstarter project you have the choice to select one of these cool new White/Blue colored MacBook cases, based on your pledge: MacBook Air 13", or the 2017 MacBook Pro 13"....”

Gumdrop cases are known for a style that is somehow reminiscent of a tire-tread-looking marshmallow, and this new case is no exception, although its design seems a bit more polished and slim in respect to other products.

DropTech is also a less-than-subtle nod to the Apple iMac of generations past, with a large aqua-colored plastic window exposing the Apple logo on the lid, and a white frame devoid of sharp edges.

The rubber portion of the case is comprised of two large protective shells connected by a flexible rubber hinge, which vaguely reminds of the Surface Book’s dynamic fulcrum hinge. The shape of the hinge is also designed to provide proper ventilation on the back of the MacBook.

According to Hickman, the DropTech case can withstand drops from a height of 5-6 feet. With that said, as noted on Gumdrop’s kickstarter page, getting a case, even a simple scratch-resistant one, can save a lot of headache, as Apple’s warranty does not cover accidental damage, which usually comes in the form of scratches or anything that affects the aesthetic of the product.
