The iPad Pro’s hidden feature to be revealed with future versions of iOS

Owners of iPad Pro tablets are about to appreciate their investment a lot more, according to recent findings.

Apple iPad Pro

The 12.9 inch iPad is currently set to charge using a 12-watt power adapter. By this token, it typically takes up to 5 hours to fully charge an iPad Pro.

With that said, a look at the iPad Pro hardware regulatory information, reveals that the USB 3.0 Lightning port integrated in the tablet, supports up to 14.5 volts, at 2 amps, which translates into a whopping 29 watts.

Should Apple enable this port to use a 29 watts power adapter, similar to the one included with the 12 inch MacBook Retina, the iPad Pro would be able to reach a full charge in half the time. To further corroborate the theory, a look at the size of the iPad Pro’s battery reveals that the terraced battery powering the 12 inch MacBook Retina, is almost identical.

No cheating

For better or worse, should a manufacturer build an adapter capable of sending that much voltage into the iPad Pro’s battery, a firmware update would be necessary for the device to accept the charge, since the maximum power allowed in, is controlled by the device itself, and plugging in such adapter would, in most cases, result in the iPad Pro simply refusing to charge.

According to a teardown of a MagSafe MacBook charger, by technology blogger Ken Shirriff, there is virtually no way to tamper with an Apple device’s charging mechanism to tweak the power input. For instance, on a MacBook, the MagSafe connector has a controller designed to communicate with another chip present in the power adapter, which provides information on whether the charger is genuine, and how much power should be sent to the device while charging.

Without this system in place, the chances of turning a device into a charred brick are very real, which is why it’s in the interest of all consumers who own Apple devices, that Apple ensures certain standards are met.
