Super Mario Bros was released for the first time ever, on September 13, 1985, as a game cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System, but only hardcore fans will know that Super Mario Bros was a sequel to the 1983 game Mario Bros. 1985 was a time when blocky graphics were considered state of the art, and personal computers were barely starting to offer color options.
Lots has changed in almost 34 years, and now a new version of this classic game has been released for iOS, for the first time.
Super Mario Run, the first ever version of the game written for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, will take you back, with a linear “autorunner” platformer, which means that the game starts with Mario constantly running forward. According to initial reviews around the Web, nearly all people who downloaded the free version of the game of their Apple devices, were pleased to see the same care for detail they remember from previous games, all the way back to Donkey Kong.
The best news of all, is that while Super Mario Run is available in the App Store, there are no plans for a pay-to-play, or in-game purchases thus far. In fact, Nintendo doesn’t seem to have any intention of getting into the same obsessive nickle-and-dime freemium model adopted by other game publishers.
Super Mario Run was initially unveiled during the latest Apple event, on September 6, on the same day Apple introduced the new MacBook Pro with OLED Touch Bar.
Apple currently holds the exclusive on nintendo’s historic franchise, and there are hints that more versions and updates are coming soon.
The game is now available in 100 country worldwide, and translated in nine languages.
A Nintendo spokesperson has also revealed future plans to port Super Mario Run to Android, but for now, iOS remains the only platform, aside from Nintendo’s own consoles, where gamers can get their Super Mario fix.
