Still rocking Windows XP? No more Dropbox for you!

Dropbox, one of the dominating cloud storage services, is about to take the hard line on die-hard Windows XP users, by not only ending support for its services, but by effectively blocking Windows XP users from accessing the service altogether through its desktop app.

Dropbox blocks access from Windows XP users

On Sunday June 26th, Windows XP users will be barred from downloading the Dropbox app on their systems, but they will still be permitted to use the service through older versions of the Dropbox app, until Monday, August 29th, when the service will stop working altogether on apps installed on Windows XP, and will automatically log users out, irreversibly.

The only viable way to use Dropbox beyond the deadline, will be through a web browser, which defeats the purpose of Dropbox on a desktop system, by eliminating the ability to drop files in a folder and have them automatically synced to the cloud.

This means that Dropbox users who are still clinging on Windows XP, a 14 years old operating system already two years into its formal 2014 retirement, will have to either upgrade to a newer version of Windows (Vista or newer), switch to a Mac, or start learning how to install and use Linux.

In its official statement published on a DropBox Help Center page, the company explains that users who are suddenly blocked from the service will continue accessing their files on other devices, such as their smartphones, tablets, and newer PCs, and no changes will be made to their accounts.
