Staingate: affected MacBook Retina displays are now fully covered by Apple

According to reports from Staingate.org, Apple has extended its coverage of MacBooks affected by issues with the anti-reflective coating in Retina models purchased as far back as 2012.

The issue came to light sometime in 2015, but instances of the defect have been tracing back years prior.

The symptom has manifested as a peculiar stain-like pattern, spreading across Retina displays, on a number of MacBook Pro laptops, caused by the wearing off of the Retina display’s anti-reflective coating.

The cosmetic impact of this issue can be significant, and in some cases, it may hinder the readability of the screen.

The patches may occur as late as seven months after purchase, also according to data collected by Staingate.org, and the stains may materialize as small spots around the edges, or as larger patterns sometime covering the entire Retina display.

It’s unclear whether other models are affected, but so far, no reports have surfaced about the latest MacBook Pro line with Touch Bar. With that said, we can only assume Apple has had plenty of time to pinpoint the issue and ensure that no further incidents will occur.

While there is no evidence of a public support page in regard to this particular manufacturing defect, customers have reported that Apple has been replacing their MacBook displays, free of charge, for models going back over five years.

Those who are affected by this issue, may schedule an appointment with the Apple Store Genius Bar, or visit an Apple Store location.
