More Touch Bar apps for Apple MacBook Pro are coming

Much like the Apple Pencil introduced with the 12.9 inch Apple iPad Pro two years ago, the Touch Bar on the new Apple MacBook Pro, took many people by surprise.

The functionality of the new feature has been demonstrated with high-end software like Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office, among the most popular.

Development of new apps for the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar has been slow, with many new apps being mostly gimmicks, such as sound machines, mini-games, and even a K.I.T.T. scanner from the 80’s TV series Knight Rider.

A new wave of apps is about to raise the (Touch) bar, and they are anything but gimmicky.

The new apps will be mostly open source, with some major players involved, including GitHub, the major investor in the Atom Text Editor, one of the most popular open source code editing applications on the Web.

Electron, a software development framework that allows to build programs across different platforms, including Android, Windows 10, macOS sierra and iOS, has recently added support for widgets, controls and other elements to be used with the new MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar.

Many existing and future apps developed using Electron are likely to get Touch Bar support, including Atom, as well as its nemesis, Microsoft’s own Visual Studio Code text editor.

An estimate of 300 apps are built using the Electron framework, including Slack, Hyper, Tidal, and WordPress.com.
