Microsoft Windows 10 next big update to feature a night mode and contacts in the taskbar
Microsoft Windows 10 Anniversary Update ‘has brought some interesting functionality to users, such as a better experience with Windows Ink, Cortana, and the Taskbar menu, among the most visible changes.
With that said, the bulk of the update, as it has been since this Summer, is centered on the stability and reliability of the operating system, as well as security improvements.
Microsoft OneCore, the unified development core on which all different iterations of Windows 10 are built upon, from Windows 10 Pro to IoT, has seen significant changes and improvements, while little has been seen in regard to UI changes.
Most recently, Windows Central has reported a small number of changes that will potentially affect the graphical interface of Windows 10 in the long run, as part of “Redstone 2”, the next big update to be expected sometime in the first quarter of 2017.
People Bar
The People universal app has been part of Windows 10 from the beginning, and its tighter integration with other apps, including Messaging, Mail and Calendar has seen positive feedback from both Windows Insiders and regular users.
In Redstone 2, the People app will get a “People Bar” extension, which will feature profile pictures of recently active contacts from the People app, to display right in the taskbar, next to the tray.
The feature, which for now we can only see through concept images sourced by Windows Central, will be a great addition to the tablet-mode experience, as it offers an easier path to recent contacts when sending emails, messaging, or scheduling appointments. On this note it’s possible that Microsoft will further tie the functionality with Office, Skype, and other applications expected to launch directly from within these new icons.
So far “People Bar” is still just a placeholder name, and will likely change in its official implementation.
Blue Light
When using a Windows 10 device at night, may that be a Surface tablet, Surface Book, or any number of Windows 10 laptops, Redstone 2 will integrate a feature that is already familiar to Apple users, as well as owners of Android phones.
Blue Light is a feature that will offer similar benefits to iOS Night Shift, and its Android equivalent, by reducing the amount of blue light emitted by the Windows 10 interface, to create warmer hues that do not interfere with sleep patterns.
The feature, as mentioned earlier, will work across all devices, from mobile to desktop.
