Here is what a laptop with a full desktop GPU looks like: MSI GT72S Gaming Laptop
Serious gamers will bow their heads at what NVIDIA and MSI have put together. The MSI GT72S Dominator Pro G Dragon, is an 8.4lb laptop with a GeForce GTX 980 desktop card, powered by an Intel Core i7 CPU, with 32GB of DDR4 RAM, a 17 inch G-Sync display, and a SteelSeries keyboard.
The GT72S is the embodiment of what we can expect for next generation gaming and VR laptops. Speaking of which, it is also one of the very few portable computers with the required specs to work with Oculus Rift, as well as HTC Vive.
According to a first-hand review of the GT72S published by VentureBeat, the list of laptops with matching performance is extremely small, especially because integrating a desktop class GPU in any other consumer laptop, is next to impossible, due to extreme heat dissipation issues. The GeForce GTX 980 at the heart of the GT72S’s graphic performance, packs as much as 8GB of video RAM, and the 6th generation Intel Core i7 CPU is overclock-ready.
VentureBeat’s Jeffrey Grubb has tested five games, and the reported frame rate numbers were quite unbelievable, even for a briefcase-sized laptop:
- GTA V: 89 - 131.15
- Overwatch: 91 - 122.117
- The Division: 41 - 55.533
- Hitman (DirectX 12): 27 - 50.8
- Hitman (DirectX 11): 23 - 42.33
Panic button
The GT72S shows just how much work has been put into optimizing airflow, which is crucial considering its specs. This is a system that is able to run unusually cool, while pushing the limits of virtually any other laptop on the market, as well as a fair share of desktop systems. With that said, there are tasks that can prove a little tough even for a monster like this, which is why MSI thought it would be appropriate to fit the laptop with a side button that cranks all the fans up to 100%.
Ultimate sound
MSI has done a great job with the integrated surround speakers. Also according to VB, the sound system on the GT72S has “...no trouble re-creating high notes while also delivering something that approaches a rumbling bass...”.
A 75Hz display
The 17 inch G-Sync enabled display that comes with this laptop, supports frame rates up to 75Hz. While most games are capped at 60Hz, 75Hz comes in handy when playing uncapped games like Forza Motorsports, and other games capable of playing, not only with an uncapped frame rate, but in 4K resolution as well.
Priced accordingly
It’s no secret that pro gaming comes at a cost. The GT72S Dominator Pro-G Dragon is a $3,100 laptop, but before dismissing it as too much machine for the price, the advantage of having a desktop-class gaming laptop that can be carried in a bag, versus a full-size desktop workstation that would barely fit the trunk on a mid-size sedan, is glaring. This is a portable computer that is capable of running high-end games with a frame rate up to 75Hz, with a desktop GPU. On top of it, the system runs cool enough to play at full specs, without roasting your lap, or turning your desk into a hot plate.
