Kickstarter shows how real gaming is done on a MacBook
Almost exactly one year ago, we covered “Bull Box”, a device, manufactured by a London UK kickstarter, which was designed to turn any average Apple MacBook, into a powerful gaming laptop, by connecting it to an external box containing a dedicated, high-end NVIDIA GTX GeForce GPU, via USB Type-C, Thunderbolt 3, or PCIe 4.0.
This means that any laptop, including the 12 inch MacBook Retina, would be capable of running high-end games like No Man’s Sky, Tom Clancy’s The Division, and Fallout 4, just as well as any other Windows 10 PC, with the only one caveat of requiring the Mac to run Windows, using Boot Camp.
Wolfepack Inc, a brand new kickstarter based in Cambridge, MA, has also decided to look into a solution for the Mac’s gaming conundrum, which essentially employs a similar principle as the Bull Box.
The Wolfe, is an external box that connects to a MacBook, and provides it with additional graphic capabilities, delivered by a high-end GPU. One basic difference from the Bull Box is that the Wolfe provides a DIY edition, which enables users to plug in their own GPUs.
A VR-ready MacBook
While the Wolfe doesn’t come cheap, it is the best way to leverage a MacBook’s graphic performance for all sorts of applications, including video editing, CAD design, and even VR, as this accessory enables any MacBook to outperform both gaming PCs and consoles, with the added bonus of rendering MacBooks compatible with Oculus VR, and HTC Vive.
Among the GPUs available, the Wolfe includes the latest 10-series GeForce GTX cards, including the GTX 1060.
When comparing a MacBook’s own graphic capabilities, with one connected to a Wolfe, the difference is staggering, as an average 13 inch MacBook Pro with an Iris Pro 5200 GPU benchmark test can only deliver up to 15 frames per second on AAA-title comparable gaming applications, while the same MacBook connected to a Wolfe is capable of delivering up to 70 frames per second.
