It’s not just you: Apple is replacing your 12 inch MacBook’s USB-C cable

According to a Google Plus post spotted by The Verge, Apple is silently updating its MJWHT2AM/A USB Type-C cable for the 12 inch MacBook, to resemble a new and improved MLL82AM/A version, effectively replacing the older cord with a new design, and without a peep to consumers.

The key difference between the older model, also known as 3a “square box” (due to the shape of the box), and the 5a “rectangular box”, is in the quality of the cable.

The Google Plus user who posted the information, Nathan K., is recommending consumers not to buy the 3a version, as it is outdated, and possibly counterfeit, as Apple has quietly started pulling the older cables from stores.

Apple is evidently putting more effort in, not only, cracking down on fake accessories, as it did with Amazon not long ago, but also updating its own offerings, to a higher quality standard, considering the inherent risk associated with buying third party accessories, often resulting in injury-causing hazards.

At the beginning of this year, Apple responded to reports of a number of faulty USB Type-C cables, with a voluntary replacement program that allowed consumers affected by the defective cables, to have their cords replaced at no cost.

Official information, outside of empirical evidence, is virtually non-existent, thus it’s worth testing this theory at various retailers. With that said, the pictures posted by Nathan K. seem to be legitimate.
