Hidden surprises within Microsoft Surface Studio

Surface Studio teardown

Microsoft first all-in-one desktop PC, is indeed one of the most interesting machines to enter the market this year.

The 28-inch touchscreen desktop is clearly targeted at creative professionals, particularly those who plan on using Surface Studio for digital painting, drawing, drafting, and similar tasks involving both the Surface Pen, and the brand new Surface Dial, a wireless, and touch-enabled digital scrolling mechanism that works with many applications in which palettes of tools, colors, settings, and other items can be selected quickly, at a turn of a Dial.

Microsoft put every bit of what it has learned from making the Surface Book, into the Surface Studio, and it truly shows.

The focus is clearly on an intuitive user experience, while the internals are anything but low-end. Speaking of internals, a recent teardown by iFixit has revealed a number of noteworthy items hidden deep within the high-end Windows 10 desktop PC.

One of the first thing to notice about the Surface Studio, is that it’s incredibly thin. As a matter of fact, it’s even thinner than the iMac Retina. With that said, squeezing a whole array of powerful hardware into such tight space, has required some level of compromise.

From the recent iFixit teardown, we have learned that the RAM, CPU, and GPU, are soldered onto the logic board, in a manner similar to what we have become accustomed with Apple products.

The only component that is removable, surprisingly enough, is the Solid State Drive, which can be replaced without removing the display. This has granted a repairability score equal to that of the Apple iMac Retina 5K.

Another surprise is the discovery of an ARM chip embedded in the logic board, which has been found to power and control the touchscreen display, which makes using a stylus on the Surface Studio, an amazingly true to life experience.

The similarities with the iMac, however, stop there, as besides the touch screen, the Surface Studio also features an NVIDIA discrete GPU, for high-end 3D applications, as well as image manipulation, video editing, and more.
