Much like most who were under the impression that yesterday’s Apple keynote would be mostly about the Apple Watch, with perhaps some indication of a new 12 inches MacBook Air with Retina display to be released within this year, we were most definitely ill-prepared for an entirely new MacBook.
Especially one that is so out of the ordinary, to earn the right to be called simply “MacBook”, with no “Pro” or “Air” qualifiers.
The aspect that surprised us was the disarming simplicity of the new MacBook, both in terms of design, and hardware configuration. The density of the logic board is beyond impressive, shrinking to a fraction of the size of any other MacBook’s. Such tiny form factor allows for the elimination of the cooling fan, making this MacBook, the first fanless Mac laptop ever.
Weighing in at 2 pounds, the new Macbook is incredibly portable, in a form factor surprisingly small, compared to the specs.
Apple is now officially adopting 5th generation Intel processors, starting with this new MacBook, powered by a 5th generation dual core Intel Core M 1.1 Ghz (Turbo Boost up to 2.4Ghz) in its base configuration, and 1.2Ghz (Turbo Boost up to 2.6Ghz), with 4GB shared L3 cache.
This laptop comes with 8GB of LPDDR3 on-board memory, and the choice of 256GB or 512GB of flash storage.
The retina display on the new MacBook brings an impressive 2304x1440 pixel resolution to an incredibly sharp and energy efficient new LED technology, developed to allow a brighter picture while consuming less power, due to a larger aperture per pixel. The result is the thinnest Retina display yet, at 0.88mm, with a 178 degrees of viewing angle.
Energy efficiency is a central focus with this new MacBook, which is why Apple has redesigned the battery, to split into separate contoured cells that fill every bit of empty space inside the unibody case. This configuration allows for all-day usage, up to 9 hours of web browsing, and 10 hours of iTunes playback.
Apple has put some serious thought into a whole new keyboard concept.
The new full-size keyboard extends from one edge to the other of the body.
A new “butterfly” mechanism has also been implemented into the keys, which greatly improves typing.
The backlit keyboard also features individual LEDs fitted into each key, to maximize energy efficiency.
The trackpad has also been redesigned from the ground up. The new multi-touch trackpad now features Taptic technology, the same technology that exists in the iPhone 6. The new trackpad features “force sensors” that increase accuracy, and allows to receive tactile “feedback” when performing a range of actions.
One impressive feature of the new trackpad is that it’s pressure sensitive, bringing a new dimension to how we use a laptop’s trackpad.
The pressure-sensitive technology allows to draw anything, from sketches to natural looking signatures.
The new MacBook is the first laptop to feature the new USB Type-C connector, whose truly universal design allows the MacBook to charge, connect to external peripherals and devices, as well as external displays, including HDMI.
Backward-compatible adapters are available separately.
Wireless connectivity support includes 802.11ac Wi-Fi (compatible with IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.0.
The integrated Headphone port features support for iPhone/iPod headsets to be used along with the ability to control volume and tracks.
With the new MacBook, Apple has reached its goal to build a truly environmentally friendly product. Arsenic and Mercury have been eliminated from the display manufacturing process, as well as PVC, BFR and Beryllium, making the new MacBook highly recyclable.
The new MacBook comes with Mac OS X Yosemite, and is preloaded with the standard set of apps, including iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand. A preview of the upcoming Photos app seems to be included as well.
