Apple iMac Retina gets a shelf: don’t laugh yet, you might have a use for it.
Lately we have seen some pretty odd accessories and products designed to appeal to the die-hard Mac fan, including a scented candle that smells like a Mac.
The latest piece of equipment from Prism Designs, features a shelf that docks on the back of your Apple iMac Retina stand, called Float Shelf.
A bit more delving into this product’s kickstarter page reveals that it is no ordinary shelf, as it is constructed using a “...solid extrusion of aircraft-grade aluminum...” which, the company claims, can hold up to 10 pounds.
According to 9to5Mac, Float Shelf is a pretty decent product, with a solid construction, and it can be used in a variety of ways, for instance, to hold a pair of speakers, and other accessories that would normally occupy a certain amount of desktop real estate.
The accessory blends with the Apple iMac rather seamlessly, and because it dock at the back of the display, it provides easy access to all ports, from any accessory one may want to keep out of sight, like an Apple Superdrive, an Airport Extreme, or an Apple Time Capsule.
The Float Shelf is not the first product of its kind, but it is the first that offers easy install without the need for tools or bolt brackets, as the unit simply slides into the iMac’s stand, docking on the back of the iMac safely, using a rubberized slot, preventing scratches to the anodized aluminum of the iMac.
The project has a goal of $25,000, which is quickly on its way to fulfillment, well ahead of schedule. At the time of this writing, investors have already pledged over $22,000, with 48 days to go.
According to Steve King, the inventory of the Float Shelf, “...Other iMac shelves are one-third the size of a Float Shelf, are made of thin bent metal, have painted finishes, can hold little more than a single hard drive, and can be difficult to install....”.
The Float Shelf currently supports both the 21 inch, and the 27 inch Apple iMac Retina. While there is no word on pricing yet, current bids start at $75, which might not be too far off from the actual price on launch in April 2017.
