Apple goes Red to fight AIDS
Next Monday December 1st, marks the 26th anniversary of World AIDS Day, the annual worldwide effort to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. The initiative started with two public information officers at the Global Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland: James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, and backed by UNAIDS programme director Dr. Jonathan Mann in 1987.
The initiative has taken different themes over the years. Its 2014 incarnation is “(RED)”. For the event, Apple has encouraged several app makers to integrate the theme into over 26 apps, possibly more, starting December 1st to December 7th. All proceeds garnered from the sale of these apps, as well as (RED) branded products, will go towards research efforts to eradicate AIDS.
Many of the apps involved have already began embracing the spirit of the initiative. Game developers have created special levels inspired by the benefit, as well as exclusive content.
“Apple is a proud supporter of (RED) because we believe the gift of life is the most important gift anyone can give," said Tim Cook, Apple's CEO. "For eight years, our customers have been helping fight AIDS in Africa by funding life-saving treatments which are having a profoundly positive impact. This year we are launching our biggest fundraising push yet with the participation of Apple's retail and online stores, and some of the brightest minds in the App Store are lending their talents to the effort as well." says Apple CEO Tim Cook in the official press release.
